This high jump photo was good in it's original all-color form. But it really comes alive with the jumper and high jump bar in color while the background is in black & white. There are various ways to accomplish this post-processing feat. If you're Mac user, however, I've found Color Splash Studio to be powerful and very easy to create selective color photos.

Very often I'll just drag that saturation slider in Aperture all the way to the left to create dramatic black & white photos of my sports photography shot under stadium lights. These two photos were shot under the lights of a high school stadium (meaning: not very good stadium lights). I think the black & white affect is a dramatic usage of this conversion that helps to highlight aggressive sports effort particularly at night when high camera ISO introduces grain in your images.

There's no rule that says you must post or sell your sports photos in color. I frequently create sepia and black & white images using Aperture. I find that high ISO grainy images look better in these formats. Images that are not tack sharp from an in-focus perspective can often look presentable in sepia or black & white. And overcast, rainy days often have a better appearance in black & white specifically.

Every now and then I'll convert some of my sports photos to black & white. I really like the way black & white action photos seems to create a different perspective of the action particularly in the face.
