Handholding a 300mm f/2.8 Lens Can by Challenging, But Worth It

I think I might try to hand hold my 300mm f/2.8 lens more often.  When free from the attachment to a monopod, I've found I have a lot more freedom to shoot my soccer subjects.  These photos were taken while sitting on my duff to get as low of a perspective as possible.

 

Capture Football Faces

Football is an action sport to photograph.  It has to be, because you normally can't see much emotion in faces due to the helmet.  But I've learned one thing.  Moms like faces - particularly faces of their little ones.  Try to get as much of the face through the helmet in your football photography.

Fall is a Colorful Time to Capture Soccer Photos

 

 

The fall season is always a great time to capture soccer photos on grass fields in the proper setting. These shots were captured during a wonderful fall morning on a field that produced fantastic fall scenery.  You must remember, however, to place yourself in the proper position on the field to capture not only the fall colors, but also the soccer action.

A Tool to Get Your White Balance Right for Proper Colors

Stadium lights as well as indoor sports facility lights can cause your DLSR's auto white balance setting to produce colors that just aren't correct.  Although you can use a test target like a gray card, there's a product called Expo Disc that I now use to easily set white balance in strange lighting conditions.  The Expo Disc attaches directly to the lens to allow you to obtain a white balance measurement and obtain an incident reading.

Before the photo above was taken under high school stadium lights, I used Expo Disc to easily get a proper white balance setting on my Nikon D300.
