The Soccer Header Photo

Some sports photos are worth a thousand words.  There are times that I get lucky and capture really engaging expressions in the heat of battle.  I think this is one of those times [shot at 300mm, f/2.8, 1/6400s, ISO 200 with Nikon 300mm lens attached to D300 camera].

Purchased Nikon's 50mm f/1.4 AF-S Lens

One of the reasons I purchased the new Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens was precisely for this photo.  This was the championship team photo that was taken at an indoor soccer facility with terrible lighting.  I didn't stop the lens all the way down to f/1.4 because I was concerned about depth of field and keeping all of the players in focus.  If the lighting required me to do this, I could have pushed it to f/1.4 aperture. 

This lens might see some duty come basketball season as well (maybe even for some volleyball). 

This photos was taken at f/5.0 aperture, 1/50s shutter speed, ISO 1000.

The Action Around the Keeper Will Net You Great Photos Eventually

If you take enough photos of the action around the keeper, sooner or later you'll end up with a few very interesting shots.  Of course this photo was cropped to only show the legs of the player in red.

Pray for a Shootout to Get Good Photos of the Goal Keeper

This is one of my favorite soccer photos from the many I've taken over the years.  It was also one of the easiest to set up for.  This photo was taken during a shootout.  Of course all of the action was occurring at the keeper.  In fact, this photo was just one of many that were really good.  Also check out the other keeper in the background waiting for his turn to stop a shot.
